Over the years my inspiration has always been to bring out smiles of and move people through my work whether it’s with the attires I make, the articles I write or the stories I create. To be a mirror to the people and see who they are more clearer, bringing confidence to their lives.
It first begun as a need for me, to make myself smile because i couldn’t afford the dresses i desired because i wasn’t like others. I wanted the dress that was extra but now that I can, I still want to make unique attires. Something that cannot be found in the show room easily.
It’s not about what we wear for me but about what was put into it when made, inspiration, warmth, love and creativity and that’s my secret because that is what makes it unique.
This specific dress I made under one hour to bring a little diversity into my life. The fabric used for this dress was 2 different kanga/leso pieces, in our Swahili language we say 2 goras’ , I divided them into 4 pieces which is 2 at the front and 2 at the back.
I decided to use two different colors of the same design of Kanga/leso to add flavor. I didn’t cut the pieces further because i wanted a long dress that could speak elegance.
The two pieces of Kanga cost 1000 kenyan shilings each at 500 shillings (9.44 dollars for both) which is affordable so it is an elegant dress under the budget dress.
On accessories i tied my hair back with an African print band, round dangling earrings and a pick belt, the accessories are minimal but just right for this specific outfit.
When i wore it i felt comfortable, elegant, sexy, beautiful and confident as a woman which is what i specifically aimed to achieve.
A little secret about this dress, the fabric can be reused to make another dress.
